Vegan Greek "tyrokafteri" (spicy cheesy dip) with tofu!
For appetizer, dip or spread for sandwiches and pies.
Simple and easy vegan and fasting recipe in 5 minutes!
A few months ago we posted our recipe with vegan Greek feta cheese, made of tofu. It is not only one of our vegan recipes that you immediately loved, but also one of our favorite recipes that has entered our menu for good. So, we decided, based on that, to make a recipe for vegan Greek "tyrokafteri" (spicy cheesy dip)..
We believe you will love it!
Its taste is unique and its texture is superb! It is cooling and very pleasantly spicy! Its taste will make you feel like you are in a Greek tavern. It is ideal for appetizers, dips, side dishes but also spread on bread, sandwiches and pita bread.
You can adjust how spicy it is by using more or less chili peppers (or replacing them with anaheim), cayenne and sweet chili flakes (or replacing them with spicy flakes).
It is an excellent occasion to make a dinner to your loved ones creating a Greek tavern menu inspired by our vegan "tyrokafteri". If you decide to do so, you can also cook some more of our vegan recipes like tzatziki, mushroom no-meat balls, potato salad, patties, Greek lentil soutzoukakia, haddock (from tofu and nori seaweed) with Greek potato and garlic purée, eggplants yahni, Cretan dakos salad, stuffed grape leaves (dolmadakia yialantzi), large lima beans (gigantes), stuffed veggies, split peas (fava beans), olive paste, of course the our vegan Greek feta cheese made of tofu, Greek arakas (peas) with sun-dried tomatoes and peppers but also red beans in tomato sauce and the wonderful Greek rustic wild greens pie & handmade filo dough.
For those who wondering, tofu is a product of soy beans. The firm tofu can be found in the refrigerators of stores with organic food and many super markets. The firm tofu is harder than the silken tofu that we find outside the fridge and it is much softer (it almost dissolves as soon as we catch it) and we do not recommend it for this recipe.
So, this is the delicious vegan "Tyrokafteri" Enjoy it today and you thank us later!
Incredibly tasty vegan Greek "tyrokafteri" (spicy cheesy dip) with tofu in 5 minutes
Ingredients
Ingredients for vegan Greek "tyrokafteri" (spicy cheesy dip)
- 200 g firm tofu
- 2 chili peppers or anaheim
- ½ clove garlic
- 3 Tbsp lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 Tbsp vinegar
- 2 Tbsp almond milk or other plant based milk
- 2 tsp sweet chilli flakes or spicy
- 1 Tbsp nutritional yeast
- 1 pinch dried ground cayenne pepper optionally
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Remove the seeds from the peppers. Press the tofu between your palms to get out most of the liquids and cut it in half. Put one piece of tofu together with all the other ingredients (except for one pepper and 1 tsp of chili flakes) and beat well in a food processor or blender. Add the remaining half of the tofu and beat very lightly, so that our vegan "tyrokafteri" has some texture and does not come out completely creamy.
- Put the content of the multi (or blender) in a bowl. Add the pepper (int thin slices) and 1 tsp. chili flakes and stir. Our vegan Greek "tyrokafteri" (spicy cheesy dip) is ready!
- You can serve it immediately, but ideally we suggest to leave it for 5 minutes so the flavors will mix nicely.
Serving
- You can can sprinkle it with olive oil, chili flakes and thin slices of pepper (chili or anaheim).
- Serve as an appetizer or dip with bread, breadsticks, rusks, pita or fried bread.
Notes
- If you want it more spicy, you can add to your vegan "tyrokafteri" more chili peppers, cayenne pepper or spicy chili flakes.
- To get richer flavor and colorful, you can use one red and one green chili pepper. Blend half of each and add the rest to our hot cheese in thin slices. Keep a few slices to decorate it :).
- For an interesting variation you can add two sun-dried tomatoes. It will not taste exactly like vegan "tyrokafteri" but it will be a delicious dip.
